“Gee, I can use this pen to write something which is going to save millions of lives.”
“I could use this pen to write something which is going to send millions of people to their deaths”
Oh my god, the pen! The pen has the power!
It has nothing to do with the pen! It has nothing to do with the computer game! All of these things are enablers, they’re levers, they’re tools for our own human brains it’s just us. We can’t, no matter how much we would like to, slough off any of the responsibility of our own decisions onto our artifacts and say they made the decision.
Best quote ever.
Okay, I'm kinda sick of having two people I can really call friends, so please, drop a line, say hi, talk a little bit. The people I know are too tired or too busy basically all the time, I hate being lonely.
First and foremost, I pride myself on my swordsmanship and knowledge on ancient weaponry. This doesn't mean that I saw Highlander at one point and thought it was really cool, I genuinely respect blades as weapons*.
I'm greatly into video games, Morrowind, Halo, Mercenaries, Left 4 Dead, Empire Earth, tons of them, it's a good avenues for conversation, trust me.
I read a great deal, Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, spinnoffs from Magic, the Gathering (I play the tcg too), Crichton, Eddings, the Redwall series holds a special place with me since they were the first full novels I was able to read on my own.
I'm into just about every science out there, pick one, geology, chemistry, philosophy, theology, even the "dead" sciences like alchemy and phrenology.
Please, if you're passing through and see something you like, say something.
Speaking of games, I've got a bone that desperately needs picking. A friend of mine recently sent me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtAdjrvD0bY and I am disgusted by what I see. Everyone I know has grown up on violent video games and they've turned out just fine. Now that gaming has become "trendy" people have been lumping real gamers in the the immature kids and stoner burnouts who play because they need a way to remember where they put their hands. The media has demonized video games in the past for desensitizing people to images of violence (probably just jealous because that's the news's job). Tendo's right, this is the same crap they pulled with comic books back in the '40's. Who among us hasn't had a bad day? Who hasn't had to deal with someone they hated? Now would it be better to grab the turdburger by the neck and beat them or is it better to wait until you get home and blow that steam off with an irreverent and mindlessly violent game? It's the same feeling of escape you get from watching a movie or reading a book, but we don't see those being dragged through the mud. Look at how much death and nudity there was in Titanic or (massive retch) 300, and everyone says "wow! great movies!!!!" Maybe it's me, maybe my hobbies really should include pounding back beer that has the consistancy and flavor of pond sludge and watch hurling, or getting so fucked up on pot that I can't remember where I left my feet, but I've gone this far without it and I'm not about to start now. Parent's worldwide, I blame you, let me tell you a little secret, kids don't really raise themselves, that's just an excuse to be lazy and churn out more brats than you can afford and then complain about being poor. WATCH YOUR LITTLE HORRORS! You don't have to beat them, but you can't just stand back and whisper "no no, prescious" and call it good.
I'm sorry, I don't normally rant and I know how cliche it is, I just needed to get that off my chest.
*Note 1: Please notice that this passage says "blades". This means blades and blades alone, anyone who comes to me saying "derp guns for teh win lolroflstomper
!" gets a crock of shit and is immediately blocked, I'm so not interested in hearing about you you prefer to hide behind your simple little machine.
*Note 2: My civil status says "alone" and I'm of a mindset to keep it that way. You want to stop by and shoot the breeze? Great! You want to hook up on Steam and play a game (when I get my new compy)? Awesome! But I'm honestly not in the market for a boy/girlfriend.
Puff: The Magic Dragon isn't about weed you freaks. e.e http://www.snopes.com/music/songs/puff.asp for those of you who believe this rumor and can still read.
